Western films and television have glamorized the dangerous life of cowboys and outlaws, riding horses and slinging guns through windy desert towns. White cowboys and gunslingers, that is. Many Black heroes have been lost to history, including cowboys, deputies, and settlers who found their way in the Wild West after Emancipation.
