There are about 100 active micronations around the world right now with a large cluster in Australia. And you’re asking – what’s a micronation? Well, it’s basically somebody – or a group of people – declaring themselves independent from any other nation. And while they’re generally harmless, the urge some people have to declare themselves beyond the reach of government does carry risks for countries with micronations. Harry Hobbs has studied micronations more than just about anyone. He’s a professor of law at the University of Technology Sydney in Australia.
