School nurses do a lot more than just hand out lollipops. They conduct mental health screenings, help prep for disasters, and even sometimes work with social workers to ensure students are properly cared for outside of school. The pandemic has only added to that lengthy list of duties. To top it off, the government recommends that schools have one nurse for every 750 students. Former school nurse and current professor of nursing at Seton Hall University Beth Jameson says that is way too big of a workload for many nurses.
