A lot of things need to be just right for life to emerge on a planet: an energy source like the sun, plus raw materials like oxygen, water, carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. And for scientists studying early life on Earth, the element phosphorus has been particularly tricky. Yale University Earth & Planetary Sciences Ph.D. candidate Benjamin Hess thinks lightning strikes played an important role in providing phosphorus to early life.
