They have blood sugar levels higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. As a result, they’re at higher risk for heart disease, stroke and the various problems that come with full-blown diabetes.  Most of the 86 million Americans with “prediabetes” don’t know it and they don’t all fit into the overweight, sedentary stereotype of diabetes, either. It’s possible to be fit and active and still be surprised with a diabetes diagnosis in middle age.
