What do you do when your cellphone breaks? Your first instinct might be to go see if someone can repair it. But have you ever been quoted for a repair that will cost nearly as much as just buying a new one? That’s because the companies that make our gadgets have lots of ways to limit what can be repaired and who can do the fixing. Consumer advocates, like Nathan Proctor with the US Public Interest Research Group, have been pushing for federal laws that will guarantee people the right to have their devices repaired.
