This hour highlights Utah Symphony and Utah Opera’s upcoming Opera Hits! program on July 20th. Every summer for nearly a decade the symphony closes shop in Salt Lake City and heads off to the mountains for the Park City Music Festival where families can lay out a blanket and picnic before a concert begins, watch the sunset as the symphony takes the stage, and hear repertoire as diverse as Michael Jackson to Claude Debussy. Utah Opera has often been part of the Festival too, staging light operas like Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore and featuring local opera stars and the Utah Opera Chorus. This summer Celena Shafer, Darrell and Jennifer Babidge, Sishel Claveri and Ryan MacPherson will perform arias from opera and Broadway at the Festival. Here to represent that ensemble are mezzo-soprano Sishel Claverie and pianist Thomas Klassen. Sishel is originally from Mexico City and is an Artist-In-Residence with the Utah Opera, having performed all over the western United States with them. Thomas is playing the piano for us but is actually a member of the Utah Opera Chorus and has been a member for nearly 15 years. Host: Eric Glissmeyer Repertoire: Habanera “L’amour est un oiseau rebelle” –Georges Bizet; I am Easily Assimilated – Leonard Bernstein; Summertime – George Gershwin; Una Voce Poca Fa – Giacchino Rossini; Follow Highway 89 on twitter @byuh89
