After 20 years at war, American troops have nearly all left Afghanistan, but they’re not leaving in victory: the Taliban is quickly regaining territory across Afghanistan, prospects for peace are unclear, and another generation of Afghan children have only ever known war. Though President Biden has chafed at the comparison, there are echoes of Vietnam in America’s retreat from Afghanistan. Are there lessons to be learned? Ha Kim Ngoc was one of those Vietnamese children of war. He’s now Vietnam’s Ambassador to the United States and has spent his career building a relationship with the country that was once his enemy.
