Most middle schools and high schools will offer some form or another of foreign language education to their students. The most commonly learned foreign language in the United States is Spanish, but recently more and more kids are learning different, more uncommon languages in hopes of being able to speak to native speakers of that language. And yet, one language remains untouched, and that is American Sign Language. Despite the many benefits learning ASL can bring to both the hearing and the deaf community, many people still express discomfort when it comes to learning it. Why have we not integrated ASL into our schools, despite all its benefits? Here to tell us a little bit about it is educator and professor Karen Aronian.
