Before 1990 you didn’t see a tenor, tenor and tenor taking to the stage for recitals. The soprano/tenor combo was the usual standard (and for some the soprano was considered the real draw). But then Plácido Domingo, José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti formed “The Three Tenors” and that was such a brilliant idea that the whole world sort of wondered why no one had ever thought of it before! 800 million people tuned in for the trio’s first concert and when the recording came out it was the biggest selling classical album in history. Lesson learned: tenors (and tenors only) can be a smashing success—sopranos need not apply. Nowadays tenor trios exist across the globe and today we have Utah’s newest in the studio: Ultimi. Isaac Hurtado, Brian Stucki and Tyler Nelson are all professors, busy family men and active singers and performers. Their combined resumes cover hundreds of roles, in exciting places and on well-known stages. Their most recent concert was for Utah Lyric Opera’s Benefit Gala. Steven Kapp Perry chats with each throughout the show. Follow Highway 89 on twitter @byuH89
