Many teachers in US schools are ill-equipped to tackle the difficult aspects of American history, and they need help. The US Department of Education and the National Endowment for the Humanities brought together hundreds of teachers, students, scholars, and historians from around the country to come up with a framework for teaching American history and civics that will help teachers do better. Peter Levine—a Tufts University professor of citizenship and public affairs—was one of the project’s leaders.
