Happy birthday, Nicolo Paganini! Today would have been his 233rd birthday and to celebrate we have 10 of his 24 Caprices for Solo Violin, a set of devilishly difficult pieces he wrote over a period of 15 years. Performing them is David Park, violinist and Assistant Concert Master of the Utah Symphony. He is playing the most of these Caprices ever attempted on live radio! Also with us is an audience of 30 Sustaining Members of Classical 89, as many as we could fit into our studio this evening. David talks about Paganini's seemingly supernatural talents with host Steven Kapp Perry and gives demonstrations of some of the tricky techniques required for these complicated Caprices. Ricochet bowing, quadruple stops, and 12-note-per-second speeds are all featured in this special birthday episode of Highway 89! Repertoire: PAGANINI Caprices 1, 5, 9, 13, 14, 16, 19, 20, 21 & 24; Follow Highway 89 on twitter: @byuh89 and on instagram: @byuh89.
