Much of the effort to hold someone accountable for the nation’s opioid epidemic has focused on Purdue Pharma, which introduced OxyContin in the 1990s. So many groups are now suing Purdue Pharma that the company has filed for bankruptcy. In the process, the company’s owners are asking for an unusual level of protection for their own fortune. Essentially—they would get bankruptcy protection without having to go through bankruptcy.
