Housing and Urban Heat

America’s deadliest weather disaster isn’t quite what you’d expect. It’s not flooding, fires, hurricanes, or tornadoes. It’s extreme heat. Summer 2021 is expected to be hotter than usual for much of the country. Jeremy Hoffman, chief scientist at the Science Museum of Virginia, explains why the nation’s hottest spots often match up with areas that were once targeted by racially discriminatory housing policies.
