Episode 3 - Teaching by Faith (Elder Robert D. Hales): Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, speaking to teachers in the Church Educational System, emphasizes the value of CES teachers in the lives of the youth of the Church. All gospel teachers must live the principles of the gospel to qualify for receiving the Spirit of the Lord. He stresses the importance of following the pattern of the Savior in improving our teaching. Teaching by the Spirit is an exercise of faith. Episode 4 - The Power of Teaching Doctrine (Elder Henry B. Eyring): Elder Henry B. Eyring of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles reminds us of the power of the Word of God. He relates the story of Oliver Cowdery's call to preach the gospel, and applies these principles to our own preparation of missionaries. These principles apply to all opportunities to teach by the Spirit. Our gospel teaching should be simple when the Holy Ghost is prompting us. Bednar, speaking as the President of BYU-Idaho, discusses the reasons for and importance of studying the scriptures. Elder Bednar teaches of the Savior and how the Liahona is an effective symbol that helps us understand the importance of the scriptures. Scripture study precedes revelation from God. Episode 8 - Importance of Asking Questions (Elder Cecil O. Samuelson): Elder Cecil O. Samuelson of the Quorum of the Seventy and President of Brigham Young University discusses the importance of asking questions in effective learning. Effective gospel learning combines both faith and questions. The Prophet Joseph Smith is utilized as an example of one who asked faithful questions. Sometimes the answers to our questions may not be what we expected or hoped for. Nephi and Alma are used as examples of the way to properly ask. Some are called to teach, and others are called to listen. Listening to others can provide correction. There is safety in counsel. As members of restored Church of Jesus Christ, we have a unique charge to acquire as much knowledge of the gospel as we possibly can. Episode 11 - The Virtue of the Word of God (Elder Earl C. Tingey): Elder Earl C. Tingey of the Seventy, and member of the CES Board of Trustees, relates to the students at BYU-Idaho the key concern of this Board--namely, the students. He gives a message to the students about the virtue of the Word of God. Elder Tingey relates the results of President Hinckley's challenge to read the Book of Mormon and discusses how testimonies have grown as a result of this challenge. Episode 12 - The Book of Mormon (Sister Virginia Pearce): Sister Virginia Pearce, formerly of the Young Women General Presidency, discusses the Book of Mormon with the students at BYU-Idaho. Personal experiences of studying the Book of Mormon have demonstrated to her its divine origin. If the Book of Mormon is true, the Church must be true. Episode 13 - How Knoweth this Man Letters (Elder Merrill J. Bateman): Elder Merrill J. Bateman of the Seventy begins by discussing the places where, and people that Jesus taught. Many were astonished at how He taught with authority. The methods by which Jesus learned are described. The Savior's mastery of the scriptures is evident in his teachings. He often taught doctrine by starting with a scriptural reference. We can follow His example by diligently searching the scriptures to hear His voice. Episode 14 - Teach them to Understand (Elder David A. Bednar): Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve distinguishes between the meanings of teaching and preaching. He conveys the importance of preaching the gospel and teaching and learning by the Spirit in the home. Parents have this important responsibility by divine assignment. Gospel doctrines provide the principles that tell us why living the commandments are important. Being part of the lineage of Abraham brings with it an important responsibility to preach to the families of the earth. Episode 15 - Beware of False Prophets (Elder M. Russell Ballard): Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles discusses the teachings of the Savior concerning the period of the last days before His second coming. The sign of false prophets and false teachers is of special concern, and Church members should be especially wary. Revelation for the Church, outside the established priesthood line, is a sure sign of false prophets. Sometimes Church doctrines are attacked openly. There is no such thing as loyal opposition in the Church. We should fill our heart and souls with the gospel of Jesus Christ, as taught by the established prophets and apostles. Download MP3
Episode 16 - The Ordinary Classroom (Sister Virginia Pearce): Sister Virginia Pearce, formerly of the Young Women General Presidency, begins with a description of the value of the Church classroom in strengthening and growing our testimonies and renewing our baptismal commitments. The scriptures should be the focus of every classroom setting. A powerful way to improve teaching is through our personal example. Good teaching can be learned by observing others. Class time should be filled with learner participation. Sister Pearce recommends that the last few minutes of class should be the time that the teacher clarifies and summarizes the gospel principles taught. Episode 17 - Receiving a Testimony (Elder Robert D. Hales): Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve describes the simple process of gaining a testimony. We can learn the basic steps from the example of Joseph Smith's preparation for the First Vision and other heavenly ministrations. Each major event of the Restoration has been preceded by prayer. Episode 18 - Teaching our Children (Sister Anne Worthlin): Sister Anne Worthlin, formerly of the Primary General Presidency, discusses the Savior's covenant of peace. Teaching their children can bring this covenant of peace to righteous parents. Primary supports parents in this responsibility. There are significant teaching moments when a child is young. From birth to age 10 is an important time for language development. Reading the scriptures to children during this time can greatly influence them. The scriptures can become an anchor in their lives if presented to them from a young age. Sharing sacred feelings can create great bonds with our children. Download MP3
Episode 19 - When Thou art Converted (Elder D. Todd Christopherson): Elder D. Todd Christopherson of the Seventy specifically directs his comments to the youth. The fundamental question of becoming converted is the focus of his comments. Submitting to the Savior's authority is the first step of conversion. Diligent scriptural study is the next step in the process. Prayers must encompass every aspect of our lives. Service is practice of the gospel law. It is an essential part of conversion. Episode 20 - My Soul Delighteth in the Scriptures (Sister Julie Beck): Sister Julie Beck of the Young Women General Presidency relates personal experiences that have strengthened her resolve to diligently read the scriptures. Every parent can become a gospel doctrine teacher in the home. Sister Beck teaches how learning effective techniques is important for both baking food and studying the scriptures. Episode 21 - Teaching No Greater Call (Elder M. Russell Ballard): Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve relates the tremendous amount of effort necessary to produce a single teacher's manual. Teachers need to restrict their preparation materials to the scriptures, the approved manuals, and the Church magazines. Effective teaching by the Spirit is the greatest calling in the Church. Episode 22 - Worship through Music (Elder Dallin H. Oaks): Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve described his experience of traveling to Brazil. He didn't know the language, but the music inspired him and drew him into the Spirit of the meetings. Hymns build testimony and faith. Singing is one of the best ways to feel the Spirit of the Lord. The Lord appointed Emma Smith to make the first collection of hymns in the Restored Church. The weekly meeting of the Quorum of the Twelve always begins with a hymn. We are becoming neglectful in North America in the singing of our hymns. The sermons in the words to the hymns should be carefully listened to. We should use hymns when we need spiritual strength. Episode 23 - Focus and Priorities (Elder Dallin H. Oaks): Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve discusses the amount of time that we have to do our work. We must treat each moment with the same amount of care as we would important resources. The amount of information is greatly increasing and we must carefully sift through it. We don’t need more information, we need more wisdom and knowledge. The Church has "bales" of information available. However, teachers must be very selective and focus on what will be most effective.
